Leeds Printers and Bookbinders Hollingworth & Moss invests in Morgana PUR

Hollingworth & Moss Ltd, printers and traditional book binders based in Leeds have announced the installation of a DigiBook 200 PUR binder from Morgana Systems Ltd, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing.

The unit represents the first venture into PUR binding for the company. The Morgana DigiBook 200 was perfect for the shorter runs undertaken at the company – shorter than undertaken by the typical binder. The target markets for Hollingworth & Moss are universities, academias and Government libraries, where the typical run length is not as large as other industries. The purchase followed a number of trials in Morgana’s head office in Milton Keynes where Paul and the team put the DigiBook 200 to the test using a real mix of materials to test the machines capabilities.  The PUR binder surpassed their expectations.

The Hollingworth family is still at the helm of the business that is still regarded by many as the market leader in academic library binding.  Paul Hollingworth, Managing Director and son of the founder of the business, commented on the suitability of the DigiBook 200 to the business: “Our core focus is on short and very short run productions.  Student thesis and book re-binds are the main source of income into the business. Typically book re-binds and book repairs are required for libraries and the Morgana machine allows us to accomodate this easily.

“With the ability to switch to manual mode we can slow the machine down to a pace that is workable and allows us to deal with damaged pages and gives us tight control on all machine functionality.  We control the milling of the book spine, which helps us to adjust the amount of adhesion, along with the amount of time the book stays in the system while we create the book block.   Once we have produced the book block we can then add a hard cover to the book if required. This will  help with durability of the book and gives it longer shelf life keeping books on shelves longer within the library.”

The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110mm to 320 mm and a maximum thickness of 50mm.  The device can convert from soft back to a hard back covering at the flick of a switch.

Commenting further on the Morgana machine, Paul added: “The small format and convenience of the DigiBook 200 means that we can move it around in the factory as it only requires a three pin connection. Because the glues are contained there is no need for any complexed ventilation system.  All in all a very flexible system.”

Commenting on the installation at Hollingworth & Moss, Ray Hillhouse, Vice President Offline Business at Morgana Systems said: “It has been a delight to work with the binding experts at Hollingworth & Moss.  They really did put the DigiBook 200 through it’s paces in order to prove to themselves that they would be able to bind just about any substrate! I am delighted to say that they were very impressed with the results.”

Hollingworth & Moss were able to gain financial assistance for the investment into the new equipment from the Leeds City Growth Fund, where 20% of the investment was provided to the company following submission of a detailed business case.  As a result of the funding the company is looking at intergrating apprenticeship schemes into the business.

About Hollingworth & Moss

Hollingworth & Moss Ltd is an innovative, dynamic business that has evolved and embraced new technologies based on the foundation of its traditional book binding skills.  The business was established in 1966 by Michael Hollingworth and Peter Moss after becoming successful with the provision of academic binding to Leeds University.   The factory at the time was the ground floor in a row of terraced houses converted into small workshops in Leeds city centre.  As the business grew it expanded onto the second floor and in 1985 they were granted urban regeneration funding to create a purpose built factory in Sheepscar where it resides today.

1988 saw sons of Michael, Richard and Paul Hollingworth join the company, and in 2004 they became Directors.  Richard and Paul brought fresh enthusiasm into the business with great ideas to propel Hollingworth & Moss into the diverse business it is today whilst still holding on to its traditional values and heritage.

As part of the business model and continued investment Hollingworth & Moss saw a gap in the market and the opportunity to offer short run PUR binding to the trade after attracting interest from local and national businesses asking for this service.  To complement the new binding technology the company has also invested in new digital printing with the purchase of a Xerox Colour J75 Press.  Along with the PUR binding service and the ability to offer trade print, the Hollingworth & Moss brand can provide a full print and bind solution.
