Morgana Finishing equipment for the Commonwealth
Morgana Finishing for the Commonwealth
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent countries. It is home to 2.2 billion citizens and over 60% of these are under the age of 30. The Commonwealth includes some of the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries, spanning five regions. Thirty-two of its members are small states, including many island nations.
Like every organisation, the Commonwealth Secretariat, based in Pall Mall, London, is a significant producer of print, and as such has its own Printing Section within the Corporate Services Division.
Workload for the printing division comprises a wide range of jobs typical for such an in-house operation. Stationery needs are always there, but the vast majority of work for the department centres around report production. “Run lengths of up to 250 / 300 copies are our forte,” confirms Lesley Peak, Interim Design & Production Supervisor for the Printing Section. “That is ideal for digital, and we do try to keep them below that if possible: we are keen to print on demand, which is so easy with digital printers,” she adds.
With many of the reports produced destined for overseas markets the Secretariat is keen to utilise digital technology wherever possible. “The e-mailing of PDF versions of reports is used wherever appropriate. However, Internet capabilities are less sophisticated in some commonwealth countries. The e-mail solution certainly doesn’t suit everybody, but that illustrates perfectly that there is still a great need for print.” Where demand dictates print runs in excess of 250 copies litho printers are sourced in order to produce the work at the most cost-effective fashion.
Digital printing equipment provides for document production; for post-press activities Morgana Systems has installed a wide range of products.
Why the reliance on Morgana? Lesley Peak is just one year into the role and therefore has only historical information to draw upon, however, this indicates previous rental of much of the Morgana post-press equipment. The products had proved so reliable and hard working that a decision was taken to purchase the equipment outright. Whilst the procurement process did necessitate the viewing of other similar machinery, nothing was found as a realistic alternative to the products provided by Morgana Systems.
Even with such a wide range of equipment in use, it is of little surprise that the guillotine comes top with regard to the product that gets most use. “No finishing department can function properly without an efficient and effective guillotine. It comes into play on so many jobs. It is an essential item,” says Lesley. The organisation uses an EBA 551 programmable guillotine provided by Morgana.
That said, with a regular demand for business cards amounting to at least ten or twelve orders per week, the CardXtra device – an automated business card cutter – is another invaluable addition to the equipment line-up. “The CardXtra makes trimming business cards an automatic job rather than a very dreary manual activity. It replaces a significant number of cuts on the guillotine with one straightforward process, and the cards produced are perfect ever time,” adds Lesley. CardXtra, only from Morgana, offers the ultimate SRA3+ business card and document automated
