Billingham Press install DigiBook 200 Perfect Binder
Tees Valley-based Billingham Press has become the latest UK print business to install a Morgana DigiBook 200 PUR perfect binding machine. Morgana Systems Ltd, Milton Keynes, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equipment for digital finishing, launched the DigiBook 200 last year at Ipex 2014 as the latest addition to its popular PUR perfect binder range. The Billingham Press purchase was made via Morgana dealer for the North East, Inkland.
Commenting on the purchase, Ian Dodds, Managing Director of Billingham Press, said: “We have been enjoying an increasing demand for our digitally printed work, and whilst we have a fully operational bindery for our litho printing, digital really demands equipment that is specific to short-run production.
“We began working with Morgana equipment some 18 months ago with the purchase of a DocuMaster bookletmaking machine. The square back capability of the system makes it ideal for a wide range of design agency booklet work that we produce – typically A4 or A5 in size, with runs in the region of two to four hundred copies.
“Having taken the decision to then seek an efficient in-house perfect binding solution, Morgana were naturally one of the companies that we approached.”
Whilst Billingham Press had never been involved in perfect binding production on-site before, the cost, the lead time, and the amount of overs being asked for by trade suppliers prompted Ian and his team to seek a more effective solution.
Ian tasked son Thomas Dodds – who has only been working in the business for a couple of years – to review the market. “Thomas saw product from a number of suppliers, including Duplo and Morgana, and his conclusion was that the Morgana DigiBook product provided the best solution for our needs,” said Ian Dodds.
Local Morgana dealer Inkland, already a pre-press supplier to Billingham Press, took the order and delivered the Morgana DigiBook 200.
“We are not producing huge volumes of work on the machine as yet,” said Ian. “But the work that we have produced – typically short-run booklet work – shows a tremendous quality of bind. The machine offers great flexibility, and our staff tell me that it is a very user friendly machine: easy to learn and simple to operate.”
Passing comment on this latest machine order from the PUR range, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director at Morgana Systems, said: “We have been delighted over the last year with the reception of the DigiBook 200. The product offers the ideal solution for print businesses seeking quality PUR binding for short-run work.”
The DigiBook 200 handles spine lengths from 110 to 320mm and the maximum thickness is 50mm. Retractable spine milling means that the device can go from soft- to hard-cover binding at the flick of a switch. Side gluing for the cover hinge is adjustable depending upon the cover style required.
Demand for PUR binding from digital printers has been growing swiftly in recent years. The DigiBook range from Morgana Systems has proved extremely popular with print operations seeking a more effective and substantial bind than that offered by regular hot-melt devices.
The DigiBook range of machines are suited to both traditional and digital printers who require either short-run or production capacity PUR perfect bound books to a professional standard. The innovative DigiBook range of machines are equipped with a patented closed gluing system, where the spine and side gluing is applied by a slot applicator for the utmost binding quality and accuracy.
DigiBook machines are innovative bookbinding products designed and built for the very latest market requirements. They are easy to use, even by non-specialised personnel, via a touch screen panel with icon graphics, suitable for the programming of all precision operations in just a few seconds. These include both start-up and shutdown and use a new, innovative system that is covered by a number of international patents.
The applicator is direct, and is hermetically sealed, without odour or toxic fume emissions, meaning that no extractor fan is required. This solution allows for the use of polyurethane glue in cartridges of up to 3kg, all adding up to simple and waste-free binding.
