DigiBook 150 - Silveredge
Silveredge, a marketing services production company that delivers enhanced communications and printing throughout the UK and Europe, has installed a DigiBook 150 PUR perfect binding machine to help it handle work from a wide range of sources, including finance houses, mainstream publishing companies, trade work from other printing businesses, and self-publishing requirements. The digital operation at Silveredge was started five years ago and currently utilises Xerox 700i and iGen4 printing engines. The company also produces litho printed work via a five-colour B2-format press. It also manages print production for clients, including blue-chip businesses.
Nick Jowett, Director of Silveredge Print and Communications Ltd, said: “We have been outsourcing a significant amount of perfect binding during the last year. Bringing all of that finishing work back under our control, together with the excellent quality offered by PUR binding, will help us enormously with turnaround times.”
The Morgana DigiBook 150 brings PUR-quality perfect binding operations in-house at the digital printing division of the company, which is based in Poole, Dorset.
The DigiBook 150 is the entry-level product. It is capable of approximately 150 cycles per hour, it can bind publications with spine thicknesses from 2mm through to 50mm, in book sizes up to 380 x 320mm. A key feature of the 150, and across the DigiBook range, is the patented glue application system. Spine and side glue is applied using an adjustable slot applicator allowing accurate control over both functions to give the best possible results. All the machines have an hermetically sealed glue and cleaning system which gives the quickest possible start-up and shutdown of the system with minimal glue wastage.
PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available, offering several additional advantages over other hot-melt adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can often compromise the strength of a typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR is resistant to this and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stocks.
“For a digital print business the DigiBook 150 is ideal. It can handle all of our needs, which includes runs that stretch from 1 to 1,000 copies. Whilst we did look at other PUR machines, the starting prices of the competition were significantly more than this entry level Morgana solution,” said Nick Jowett.
Commenting on the installation at Silveredge, Ray Hillhouse, Sales Manager of Morgana Systems, said: “The binding requirements at Silveredge have grown over time – as happens with many digital print operations. The amount of perfect binding outwork being placed by the company suggested that the installation of their own entry-level binder would be a cost-effective investment. The company is now selling PUR binding as a service to other print operations in the Poole area, as well as producing its own growing volume of work.”
