LITHO TO DIGITAL MOVE MEANS A NEW LOOK AT FINISHING
When former Operations Director of The Print Factory, Gary Kiernan, decided to set up in business for himself a year ago, he acquired Express Printing of Orton Southgate near Peterborough and set himself the aim of growing the company whilst transforming it gradually from a B3 litho operation into a business primarily centred on digital print.
Express Printing had an established reputation for fast and efficient production of short run newsletters and magazines, as well as providing a broad based service to many charities and organisations in the voluntary sector. The acquisition of a Xerox DocuColor 240 and two Oce 2110s meant faster production and a greater colour content for this type of work, as well as opening the door to new business opportunities.
“We were now printing digitally in b&w and colour on a full arrange of coated and uncoated stock”, Gary comments, “so we needed finishing equipment designed to finish digital output.” Having looked at different options, he chose a package from Morgana Systems comprising an AutoCreaser 33, a DocuFold and a CardXtra business card cutter. “The AutoCreaser seemed the obvious choice to avoid cracking problems”, Gary said, “while the DocuFold is very highly automated and offered us the programmatic capability we required. As far as the CardXtra is concerned, it has turned business card production from a problem into a profit centre – we can now produce a run of 12 separate cards for what it used to cost us to produce one.”
“At the moment”, Gary Kiernan says “we are a classic example of a B3 litho printer migrating to digital and the new finishing kit is helping to make the transition a smooth one.”
