DigiBook 300 - The Digital Press  (The Digital Press)

The brief

The Digital Press, Poole, Dorset, was already a user of the DigiBook 150 – a PUR perfect binding machine from Morgana Systems. It had been in use by Peter Randall, owner of The Digital Press, and his team for just over 12 months. Commenting on his new requirements, Peter said: “The DigiBook 150 was the ideal starting point for us with PUR. We had been using hot-melt prior to that purchase, and it really was not suitable for short-run perfect binding of digital work. Now, just one year on, we have out-grown the DigiBook 150! Typical runs for us have now grown to 400 or 500 copies: that is perhaps just a bit too much for the 150 due to the amount of handling in the process.”

The solution

DigiBook 300 is capable of producing up to 300 books per hour with spine thicknesses from 2mm through to 50mm, and binding length from 100mm up to 450mm. The angled work surface keeps books in a vertical position.

PUR is the strongest, most flexible binding adhesive available, offering several additional advantages over other hot-melt adhesives. When inks, coatings or digital print toners are present in the spine area these can often compromise the strength of a typical hot-melt perfect binding. PUR is resistant to this and will form a super-strong bond with all weights and finishes of paper stocks. In addition PUR works well with synthetic and recycled-content stocks.

Commenting on his upgrade, Peter Randall said: “The DigiBook 300 speeds up the whole set-up process, is easier to use with less manual intervention, and the adjustable milling capability provides a much better solution for section work: we can mill up to 2.5mm which provides for significantly better adhesion.”

Typical work for perfect binding at The Digital Press includes pre-runs and preview copies of paperback books for publishers, or final proof copies of some publications; short-run manuals; and property booklets. “The additional capacity provided to us by the new machine will allow us to offer binding as a service to other digital print companies in the area,” added Peter Randall. “We had anticipated doing this with the first PUR machine, but we never really found the time!” Digital print production at The Digital Press is created on a highly productive Xeikon 5000 machine.

The result

With the machine installed and running, Peter Randall adds: “We are expecting some longer print runs to bind early in 2014: they will be a breeze now with the DigiBook 300. I have to add, however, that the 150 is still a great product – it is ideal for organisations handling very short runs of digitally produced books, and offers a very affordable entry point for PUR. The great thing about buying such a device from Morgana is that you can then progress to the next model in the range as your business in this sector grows.”

Commenting on the installation at The Digital Press, Ray Hillhouse, Sales and Marketing Director at Morgana Systems, said: “This order just shows how quickly the demands for high quality PUR binding can grow once a print business has the facility. Just 12 months ago Peter installed his first DigiBook and was delighted with his new capability. Now, he can see the benefit of speeding up the whole process in order to process even more finishing work.”
