CardXtra - Morgana Finishing equipment for The Commonwealth
The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of 53 independent countries. It is home to 2.2 billion citizens and over 60% of these are under the age of 30. The Commonwealth includes some of the world’s largest, smallest, richest and poorest countries, spanning five regions. Thirty-two of its members are small states, including many island nations.
Like every organisation, the Commonwealth Secretariat, based in Pall Mall, London, is a significant producer of print, and as such has its own Printing Section within the Corporate Services Division.
Workload for the printing division comprises a wide range of jobs typical for such an in-house operation. Stationery needs are always there, but the vast majority of work for the department centres around report production. “Run lengths of up to 250 / 300 copies are our forte,” confirms Lesley Peak, Interim Design & Production Supervisor for the Printing Section. “That is ideal for digital, and we do try to keep them below that if possible: we are keen to print on demand, which is so easy with digital printers,” she adds.
With many of the reports produced destined for overseas markets the Secretariat is keen to utilise digital technology wherever possible. “The e-mailing of PDF versions of reports is used wherever appropriate. However, Internet capabilities are less sophisticated in some commonwealth countries. The e-mail solution certainly doesn’t suit everybody, but that illustrates perfectly that there is still a great need for print.” Where demand dictates print runs in excess of 250 copies litho printers are sourced in order to produce the work at the most cost-effective fashion.
Digital printing equipment provides for document production; for post-press activities Morgana Systems has installed a wide range of products.
Why the reliance on Morgana? Lesley Peak is just one year into the role and therefore has only historical information to draw upon, however, this indicates previous rental of much of the Morgana post-press equipment. The products had proved so reliable and hard working that a decision was taken to purchase the equipment outright. Whilst the procurement process did necessitate the viewing of other similar machinery, nothing was found as a realistic alternative to the products provided by Morgana Systems.
Even with such a wide range of equipment in use, it is of little surprise that the guillotine comes top with regard to the product that gets most use. “No finishing department can function properly without an efficient and effective guillotine. It comes into play on so many jobs. It is an essential item,” says Lesley. The organisation uses an EBA 551 programmable guillotine provided by Morgana.
That said, with a regular demand for business cards amounting to at least ten or twelve orders per week, the CardXtra device – an automated business card cutter – is another invaluable addition to the equipment line-up. “The CardXtra makes trimming business cards an automatic job rather than a very dreary manual activity. It replaces a significant number of cuts on the guillotine with one straightforward process, and the cards produced are perfect ever time,” adds Lesley. CardXtra, only from Morgana, offers the ultimate SRA3+ business card and document automated cutter. The guillotine, simple and straightforward to use, has been designed to produce efficient cutting tasks and provide high productivity.
With booklets a core operation the Foldnak 88 sees regular activity for collating, stapling, folding and trimming product ready for distribution.
The comprehensive suite of Morgana equipment in use in the Print Division continues to service the organisations print requirements as required. The line-up currently includes:
CardXtra: A fast, versatile and very easy to use multi-function device. The suction feed CardXtra is ideal for the on-demand environment and features the ability to take A3 plus sheets in weights up to 400gsm. It can produce up to 140 business cards a minute (7 x 20-up sheets) and can also be used for postcards, menu’s and other formats. It allows for extremely fast set-up and has quick-change rotary blades. It has pre-selectable programmes for different cutters as well as a pre-programmable memory for storing common jobs.
A recognition sensor allows the CardXtra to follow the printed image. This is achievable by printing a special mark on the sheet, the size and position of which is shown on the downloadable templates, available at www.morgana.co.uk/download-library/
Engineered to accept SRA3+ paper and card (320 x 469.5mm) and accurately cut small, medium and high volumes of paper and card while allowing the operator to get on with other tasks. Downloadable PDF and EPS templates are available to help position business cards and other job styles for imposition.
AutoCreaser Pro 33: This model is based on the high popular AutoCreaser but now boats the intuitive 7-inch SmartScreen to control the main functions of the unit. Key in the sheet length (popular sizes are pre-set), touch the fold type for the finished product, and press the green button.
The productivity of the AutoCreaser Pro 33 has been improved with a massive 50% increase in speed with no loss of accuracy. Now capable of running at up to 8,500 A4 sheets per hour, and an astonishing 11,000 A5 sheets per hour, this is Morgana’s most productive creaser to date.
EBA 551 Programmable Guillotine: This unit now features 99 programmes with up to 99 steps per programme. The 551 has an electronic photocell safety guard protecting the front table area, and a hydraulic precision drive for blade and clamping. A manually operated hand wheel for fine adjustment of the back fence and an electronic digital display with an accuracy of 1/10 mm provide for great accuracy and simple operation.
The EBA has a large cutting capacity, an infinitely adjustable clamping pressure with display and a foot clamp for pre-pressing. There is also an optical and mechanical cutting line indicator. Side tables at the right and left side are optional, as is a front and rear air table (LT versions).
Foldnak 8: Versatility and short set-up times make the Foldnak 8 outstanding in the production of booklets. The comprehensive standard features include electric delivery (adjustable), automatic release, side jogging, copy counter, control lamp, feed control, staple empty control and staple miss control.
Foldnak 8 can also be fitted with a collator or trimmer enabling up to 2,000 booklets an hour to be collated, stapled, folded, pressed, and trimmed on-line. This model can be connected to all standard bench-top collators.
KB 2000S: The perfect system for strong and professional hot-melt binding of a large variety of substrates including digitally printed sheets. A unique slitting and fanning device allows a high-levelled contact of glue to all sheets to be bound.
The sheets to be bound – from 3mm to 60mm thickness – are held tight in the clamp of the binding carrier by a pneumatic drive system. The clamp moves across the slitting/fanning device (on/off selectable) and the glue assembly, into the cover clamp section. A pneumatic driven cover attachment and side pressing finishes the book to provide a professional appearance.
Professional multi-layer glue assembly, including reverse rotating smoothing roller, allows for up to 320 books per hour to be produced.
Matrix Laminator 370: The Matrix 370 is the ideal complement to any print environment where there is a need to laminate short to medium runs length of high quality print. With a maximum roll width of 340mm, this machine is ideal for all SRA3 applications giving a smooth matt or gloss finish on digital and litho printed stocks.
